Welsh Conservative Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes MP, has welcomed the news that Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd have secured a review into the Welsh Labour Government’s decision to designate a Wales-wide Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) following a tied vote during the first debate of the new Senedd.
As a result, a committee in the Welsh Parliament will now urgently review The Water Resources (Control of Agricultural Pollution) (Wales) Regulations 2021 and present its recommendations to the Senedd.
Commenting, Brecon and Radnorshire Conservative MS, James Evans said:
“Sadly, the Welsh Labour Government’s agricultural policies over the past few years have shown nothing but contempt for farmers and these draconian regulations will have a devastating impact on farms and livelihoods across rural Wales.
“We need a more flexible, evidence-based policy that secures the support of the industry, and we hope the relevant committee now performs their vital role in ensuring the best legislation possible is put through the Welsh Parliament.”
Welcoming the announcement, Simon Baynes MP said:
“I’m delighted to see that the Welsh Conservatives are successfully holding the Welsh Labour Government to account in the Welsh Parliament and are standing up for the agricultural sector and our farmers here in Clwyd South and the rest of Wales. It’s vital that in a country like ours, which places a large emphasis on our agriculture industry, we ensure that we look after our farms, farmers and their livelihoods.
“I’m sure that by securing this review, it will provide an opportunity to ensure that we are able to support our farmers and the wider sector, whilst also ensuring we maintain our excellent standards on food and the environment.”
